What is timber flooring / hardwood flooring?

Solid wood flooring, as the name suggests, is made of solid wood throughout its thickness. It is usually made of hardwood species, such as oak, cherry, maple, or walnut, and its major advantage is that it can be sanded and refinished many times over the course of its lifespan.

At Carpet Court we offer a wide range of wood flooring to change the appearance of your spaces. From wood tiles and hardwood timbers to maple wood planks to oak wood flooring, we’ve got you covered.

What is engineered wood flooring?

Engineered wood flooring or engineered timber flooring looks very similar on the surface to solid wood, but it is made from a thin layer of hardwood bonded over 3 to 10 layers (typically 5) of high-quality plywood. This construction technique results in a wood floor that is more stable than a solid wood floor as it is less susceptible to shrinkage and expansion movement due to fluctuations in humidity or temperature. These floors are also able to be installed directly over concrete.

Engineered wood flooring is somewhat less expensive than solid hardwood, but most types can be sanded and refinished only once since the surface hardwood layer is relatively thin.

There is no clear advantage to one form of wood flooring over the other; your choice depends on how much you value the relative merits of each.

Parquet flooring

Parquet flooring is the name given to a type of flooring made from small blocks or strips of wood laid to create a regular and geometric pattern. Having originated in the 1600s and associated with Versailles, parquet wood flooring has always been sophisticated and beautiful, adding interest and texture to the floor.

Parquet flooring is essentially a wood mosaic and can come in virtually any pattern. Popular parquet designs include herringbone, chevron, checkerboard and basket weave. Check out our parquet flooring ranges Rhino Evercore Herringbone and Quick-Step Intenso.

What are the benefits of engineered timber hardwood flooring?

Hardwood flooring is an investment to your home, not only do they look great and feel great, but they are durable and last a long time. Plus, buyers are willing to pay top dollar for homes with hardwood floors.

Wooden floors are easy to look after, requiring very little maintenance beyond regular vacuuming or sweeping and occasional damp mopping. When a hardwood floor starts to get damaged and worn down, you have the option of refinishing it. This involves sanding the surface down past the finish and any other defects, then re-applying stain (if desired) and a protective finish leaving you with brand new looking floors.

Hardwood flooring works with all styles of decorating, from traditional to modern. Available in a range of wood species, timber floors can be sanded and stained to suit the home owner’s taste. When your style changes, you also can change the look of your hardwood floors.

Where should I use wood flooring in my home?

Timber flooring is solid and sturdy, it can withstand heavy foot traffic, cleans up easily and is softer underfoot than tiles or concrete. All these attributes make it a great flooring option for most areas of the home, including, kitchen, living areas, bedrooms, halls and entranceways. Pop a cozy rug down on your wooden floor in the bedroom or lounge for added warmth, texture, and noise insulation.

Solid timber floors are not recommended for wet areas, therefore wood flooring in bathrooms and laundries due to the high moisture and water coming from all directions: bathtub overflows, sink spills, shower pooling, or washing machines flooding. Opt for an engineered wood here instead or move away from wood altogether.
