Waiau Rugby Club

We are a small rural rugby club situated on the main route from Hanmer Springs to Kaikoura, 2 hours drive North from Christchurch. Our Club comes under the Hurunui Rugby Club umbrella for our local players. As we have no affiliated members, there is no income from subs or games to maintain buildings and grounds, of which we are still bound to do. We fundraise by running several events, this money covers maintenance and compliance costs for the building and grounds. Any improvements or upgrades have to be financed through grants or one off special events. We have a very small but active committee and organising events can be a challenge.

The clubrooms are hired out for many functions and events by the wider community and therefore they need to be of a high standard. We are applying to replace the carpet in our main social area of the clubrooms, it is at least 48 years old and could become a health issue for younger children and is a trip hazard by the front door, therefore a safety issue. If we were successful it would then be possible to improve the facilities in our kitchen area and the main area would be
complete.

After reading the entrants last year the team and I have chosen Waiau Rugby Club as the winner for the 2024 Rhino Kids project. Their flooring was old and in bad shape and definitely needed some upgrade. On meeting the treasurer Michelle, I worked out a quote to replace carpet in the main social area over and above what  RhinoKids offered. The transformation was awesome and install happened over one single day. Feels good to be able to help out in our local community and spread a good name.
