Punahau Early Childhood Care Centre
We are a bilingual kaupapa Maori Early Childhood Care Centre. We are licensed for 15 tamariki per day and currently have 5 full time staff and 2 students that we are supporting to gain qualification. We have 20 tamariki in our centre throughout the week aged from 6 months to 5 years.
The flooring fund would go toward improving our under 2’s and common quiet space where whanau share and read books with their tamariki. We have hard wooden floors original to the house which was built in the 1950s and is currently covered by memory foam mats. We would like a comfortable, warm, safe space for our babies to crawl and play. We would also like to improve the safety in this room by having a fixed floor covering such as carpet.
If we received this funding we would be able to invest the saved money into our expansion. We currently have a long wait list as we are a unique service being bilingual and kaupapa Maori and iwi run. We also charge the lowest fees in the area as we want tamariki to be engaged in education and don’t want finance to be a barrier. We want all tamariki to have equitable opportunities to education.

The carpet is of amazing quality and has improved the warmth and appeal of our premises. Our pepe are really enjoying crawling around in the space and the room is used so much more now due to the comfort of the area. It has also greatly improved the safety for our under 2’s as they navigate the tricky times of learning to walk and climb.

Rhino Kids is a fantastic program offered by Carpet Court NZ helping make the learning environments welcoming and warm for little carpet angels of all ages. Carpet Court Levin’s choice for this year’s Rhino Kids was Punahau Early Childhood Centre. This was an easy choice for Carpet Court Levin to make from the initial application, not to mention the fact that the Under 2’s room was bare wooden floors (not ideal for any angels).
Our friendly knowledgeable salespeople went through different products showing pro’s and con’s with each and we all agreed the Rhino Phoenix 40oz carpet in the colour Gullendin was the best option for comfort and warmth when paired with Dunlop Dreamwalk 11mm 120kg underlay.
The greatest of all contract installers, Jeff, from Ohau Flooring came along and got the new underlay and carpet installed.
Punahau Early Childhood Centre staff got stuck in with some painting in the areas before the installation and together we made a beautiful, finished area for the little pipi to enjoy while they learn and grow.
It has been an absolute pleasure for Carpet Court Levin to be part of Rhino Kids 2022 program and support such a deserving, needed organisation like Punahau Early Childhood Centre in the Taitoko region (Levin).
